Bally Minute # 3

I have a couple things to touch on today…Being in Columbus, Ohio and having to start throwing is a little difficult. I mean unless you have some snow cleats that break through ice, you are probably going to have to throw indoors somewhere. So I am lucky enough to be able to throw at the indoor football facility at Ohio State, and let me tell you, it is really top notch. So every other day my throwing partner, Mike Barber, and I go there to throw and usually have no problems doing so. Well the other day was a little different. We walked in and there was a sign that said “Ohio State Football Personnel Only – No Cameras Allowed,” so obviously the team was practicing for the game coming up against Texas. So we just kinda sat there and watched the practice for about 15-20 minutes and most of you reading this are probably thinking well why is this so cool and why would you waste a blog on it,well to all those people who are thinking that heres why: I’m a sports nerd and I really appreciate watching, listening, attending, and learning about all sports. I really have so much respect for athletes and I really enjoy watching them perform, so being able to watch an elite program such as Ohio State practice when most people don’t get to ever see that, was a special thing.

So now to the main event…This morning Christian (my brother in law to be) and I go to the YMCA to play catch, and we are thinking we will go to the basketball court inside (because there’s 3 inches of snow on the ground) and there will be no one in there and we will throw and get out. Wrong. Let me tell you something else its 6 AM and we walk in and theres a full on 5 on 5 basketball game going on. Not only are they playing at 6 AM but all their shirts were soaking wet with sweat so they had to been playing for at least an hour before we got there. So thats my first problem: Who ARE these guys who get up before daybreak to hit the Y for a basketball game?! And let me fill you in with another thing these guys aren’t in the 25-30 age range, these guys are grown men I would say 32-60 range and thats not the problem I see in this. See, I think it’s great that these guys are going to the Y at 4am, but what I didn’t get is why these guys were treating this break-of-dawn pick up bball game like the NBA Semi-Finals. Getting mad when they miss a 28 footer. Kicking the ball against the padded wall panels like Adam Vinatieri in his prime when they fumble a no-look pass. I mean come on. Obviously there was “That Guy” on the team thats about 28 and while everyone else is just trying to have a good time, this guy is hogging the ball, calling out his teammates when they miss a foul shot, and in his head he has a full on count of how many points, assists, rebounds and fouls eveyone else has. So my advice is just have a fun friendly game of basketball and leave the kicking to Adam Vinatieri.IMG_3425.jpg
Listen to Jim Rome’s Rant on the different Softball Guys- it’s hilarious.

Awesome blog.
I hate to say this, but the Buckeyes better bring it against Texas. Both teams have a lot to gain and lose in that contest. Recruiting takes a big hit when you get smashed by another team. Just ask Florida State, they used to be among the big dogs, but the last 5 years have been almost the 4th best team in the state of Florida.

Less than two months, then you get to throw for real again. Has the rush begun to move up your body yet. Anticipation of a new year………..I miss it myself from my football days. Speaking of football, your team has one of the best football players that ever came out of Tampa Bay in Elijah Dukes. Guy is built like a tractor-trailer rig.

Well, got to hit it, but keep up the great writing.

Collin, The Buckeyes are in real trouble against Texas. Hook ‘em horns!! More importantly, thanks so much for running this blog. I’ve really enjoyed reading it.

As a loyal Wolverines fan, believe me when I say I’m really doing all I can to bite my tongue considering how awful U of M has been of late.
It’s pretty cool to read a real big leaguer’s posts and see him comment as well. Keep up the great work.

Hey, Bally! Lovin’ the blog… it’s nice to see inside the life of a player who actually updates outside of the postseason :)
Personally, I hate the Longhorns (grew up Aggie, named after Kyle Field–gig ‘em!) so go Buckeyes… I guess?
I’m a sports nerd too. Actually, I’m a nerd in general–I just blogged about NASA TV yesterday–but especially about sports, so I totally understand what you mean. I watch any football game I can get, any baseball game, everything. I love watching sports–I’m not coordinated enough to play, though.
Keep it up!!

You’re doing great — showing off the blog to lots of people regularly, including other players/agents. It’s great how you are a key part of the community already. Keep it up!

Bally —

I just came across your blog and I’m lovng it! I just spent the past hour reading through all of your posts.

One thing I was wondering is if you’re still in touch with Plex. If so, what’s he up to? I know he went to play Independent League ball last year. Any chance he gets an invite to a MLB facility this spring? I work with a friend of his (they played ball together down at Winthrop) and had always talked of heading up to Harrisburg when Plex was there but never got around to it. I don’t know if my friend (Swanny) has been in touch with Plex since he left H’burg so I thought if you had some info I could relay it to him.

Anyway, keep up the great work and we’ll see you at Nats Park in April!

ELO… nice.

Bally your blog is blowing up, dude. Keep it real and the people will keep it coming I’m sure… I have a question for ya. What do you think about all this Teixeira stuff and how cool will it be if the Nats land him? Good luck…

Sorry about that OSU-PSU game. It was great, if Pryor only would have cut up the middle instead of around the outside. That was one of the best games I have seen in a long time.

I heard your guarantee today. haha. Whats my prize?

My young padawan, we (in the geezer class) may not be as quick as we used to be, but the competitive fires still smolder inside. At 50, I still run full court a few times a month, and hold my own with the youngsters. And pay no attention to that man over there behind the curtain who is “spinning” the truth – that guy with his shirt off looks like he ate the basketball, not like he’s playing it.

Nice appearance on Grant Paulson’s “Minors and Majors”, I especially like that playoff / world series scenario you laid out. I am SO ready for spring training!

Whats up Bally? Two questions for ya:

1) Have you seen the new uniforms? Which ones do you like the best (home, road, red alternate or blue alternate)?

2) Now with Daniel Cabrera here, what do you see the rotation as? You, Lannan, Olsen, Cabrera and Zimmermann?

Thanks and have good holidays.

Hey Bangzoom08 hows it going, thanks for the holiday greatings. umm my favorite uniforms would have to be the new road ones, I like that new script writing. and yeah I just saw that we got a real good pitcher in Daniel Cabrera I would say that there are 3 spots that I would say are set and thats Lannan, Olsen and now Cabrera and the other 2 spots are going to be a fight to the finish with I would say a list of about 5 or 6 guys and its going to be tough and im working extremely hard right now to show everyone im ready for a spot.

Thanks Bally. I’m going to have to get a new #40 Balester jersey.

How closely have you been following the Teixeira sweepstakes? It’d be great if the Nats landed him with a line-up of Teixeira, Zimmerman, Milledge, Dukes, Flores, Guzman, Willingham, Hernandez . . . as a pitcher I’m sure you’d enjoy that offense.

hey bally, did you see that you are getting quoted on the message board for the nationals?Real cool keep up the good work on the blog!

I’ve been reading the blog for a while but I am a first time commenter. I just wanted to say that you have good taste in music. And if you like Jason Mraz you should listen to his song called ‘Wordplay’.
